Our Current Offer
(Winter 2006)
Special Selection Winter
2006 ($200)
Moorilla
2005 Sauvignon Blanc ($20)
Every wine I've tasted so far in this
new "entry level" range from
Moorilla has been great. I don't know
how Tassie wine (from Tassie fruit) can
be sold this cheaply. This wine can't
really be compared with other savvies
- think of the crispness of an acidic
pear, and you're on track.

Scotchman's
2005 'The Hill' Chardonnay ($15)
Wondering where the bargains are with
the wine glut? This is one of them. Unbelievable
quality-price ratio - great Chardy characters,
deftly handled oak - ideal accompaniment
to salads, or a smoked salmon-based dish.

Nepenthe
2004 'Charleston' Pinot Noir ($20)
Finally, there are a few more Australian
wine makers able to deliver sub-$20 Pinot
Noir that tastes like a Pinot Noir should.
This is an example of all the right components
(fruit, tannin, structure), at a keen
price.

Zilzie
2004 Tempranillo ($17)
This is all about fresh fruit underpinned
by savouriness and enough tannins to give
it structure. Try to think about the flavours
when you try it, but the thoughts that
came to my mind were stewed rhubarb, strawberries,
and bit of ‘pippiness’.

Sally’s
Hill 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon ($25)
I drank this
after something of a master class on cabernet
sauvignon, and thought this was a very good
example of what good winemakers strive for
with cabernet sauvignon, it is all about
the structure, using fine tannins to establish
the skeleton, fleshed out with fruit characters |

Cooralook
2004 Heathcote Grenache-Shiraz
($18)
I
am not a big fan of the sometimes ‘extracted’,
Grenaches which have too much tannin and
not enough fruit. This example certainly
benefits from the Shiraz component, and
is an altogether softer and more fruit
driven style of wine.

Ten
Minute by Tractor 2003 10X Chardonnay ($28) If
you're a fan of White Burgundy (i.e.
the real, French stuff) then have a look at this.
Hard to believe this is the second label - fabulous
stuff from winemaker, Rick McIntyre.
Cooralook
2004 Heathcote Shiraz ($25)
Another example
of why Heathcote Shiraz is the new Connawarra
Cabernet. Terrifically made wine from an all-star
cast assembled by Rob Kirby (of Village Roadshow),
which again oiverdelivers at the price point.
Auction boxes: Looking
for something different? These are mixed cases
of "interesting" stuff I've bought at
auction recently. No tasting notes, because sometimes
thery are single bottles. A test of trust! Usually
quite a bit less than current release prices,
but no guarantee as to provenance or condition.
Limited stocks. $180 - $280
